JORDU SCHELL BIO:

Jordu Schell has been providing concept art in the industry for over ten years, and has been in the film and television industry since 1987. His talent as a designer and sculptor is world renowned, with his credits including: “Avatar”, “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian”, “300”, “Hellboy”, “Aliens vs. Predator – Requiem”, “Men in Black”, “The Mist”, “Batman Returns”, “Edward Scissorhands”, “Alien: Resurrection”, “The X-Files Movie”, “Predator II”, “Galaxy Quest”, “Evolution”, “Babylon 5-The Series” (on which he designed an Emmy Award-winning creature make-up and the first fully digital creature for a television series), and many more.

JORDU SCHELL LECTURE INFORMATION:

In this hands on Workshop, students will sculpt a half size creature bust from their own design, under Jordu Schell’s master tutelage. *Students should bring a 2D creature portrait design (drawing) which they have completed prior to the workshop. The design should not be full figure. Design should be bust size. Because this is a 1day workshop, please plan to utilize the time to sculpt rather than to sketch a design.

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

Tools - are personal and depends on the artists preference:

• 1x 25lbs. bag of Laguna Wed Clay
• 10in x 10in square board
• 2 long screws that are drilled into the board and come out at least 3 inches a piece
• Optional: plastic eye forms or glass beads
• Spray Bottle with H2O
• Turntable if desired
• Paper Towel
• Plastic Bag

DAVID KASSAN BIO:
As an expression of his own calculated observation and visual consumption of surrounding environment, introspective glimpses of reality imbue the art of David Jon Kassan. By immersing himself into his subject matter, Kassan is able to infuse his painting with life and realism. Kassan's direction of realism follows the philosophies employed by the Ashcan School of American Realists. Kassan's influences are varied; citing Robert Henri and John Sloan as his primary influences on philosophy and subject matter. As for style and technique he cites Antonio Lopez Garcia, Mark Rothko, Franz Kline and Clyfford Still as influences as well.

DAVID KASSAN LECTURE INFORMATION:
Fine Artist David Kassan will present a slide presentation of his work and demo his drawing techniques from the live model. Students will draw from the live model during the course of the session.

James Gurney is the author and illustrator of the New York Times bestselling Dinotopia book series. He designed the World of Dinosaurs stamps for the U.S. Postal Service and has worked on over a dozen assignments for National Geographic magazine, painting reconstructions of Moche, Kushite, and Etruscan civilizations. He has won the Hugo, Chesley, Spectrum, and World Fantasy Awards. Solo exhibitions of his artwork have been presented at the Smithsonian Institution, the Norman Rockwell Museum, and the Norton Museum of Art. His most recent book, Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter (2010) was the #1 bestselling art-instruction book on Amazon.com and is based on his blog gurneyjourney.blogspot.com.

TONY KIEME BIO:

Tony Kieme has taught 'Concept-Art' classes at Art Center College of Design, Otis College of Art and Design, Laguna College of Art and Design, and Gnomon School of Visual Effects. Some of his film work includes
designing robots for Transformers, storyboarding for The Matrix:Reloaded and Matrix:Revolutions, conceiving creatures for Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, and conceptually illustrating images for the Watchmen. He has also developed concepts for various commercials and music-videos, such as Wu-Tang's Swarm set designs. Tony Kieme has additionally curated and managed an 'urban-art' gallery, co-founded a clothing business, and studied the craft of filmmaking. He is now pursuing a Fine-Arts background in
conceptual photography. Tony Kieme attended Art Center College of Design for a Bachelors of Science in Industrial Design.

TONY KIEME LECTURE INFORMATION:

Concept Artist Tony Kieme will present a slide presentation of his work and discuss his career in the film industry. He will also present a brief demo of his working process and discuss his work. A Q&A Session will follow his Presentation + Demo. Tony will talk one on one with attendees following the presentation.

DIRECTIONS:

We are located on the 3rd floor of the 3 story chocolate brown building that is on the
right of Factory Place as you are coming from Alameda. You will see our sign on the
upper left of the builidng, and you will see our 5 windows facing downtown LA as you
approach the building. The building has an indoor elevator, and is wheelchair accessible
through an outdoor wheelchair lift.

There is free street parking in front of the brown building.

GLENN VILPPU DRAWING WORKSHOP INFORMATION:

The workshop will include how to capture the action of the pose and then build upon it to create
drawings with vitality. Vilppu is well known for conveying complex principles in simple, understandable terms to artists of beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels of ability. Come prepared to draw from the live model as Vilppu masterfully demos and lectures on gesture drawing from life.

*Please bring your own drawing materials. Some drawing materials may be available for sale only at Korpus, but supplies may be very limited. Drawing benches, some easels, and light refreshments will be provided. Space is limited to about 20 participants, so sign up early!

*Please note: While attendees may attend either or both the morning and afternoon sessions, it is
recommended that those who can only attend one session attend the morning session, since the
afternoon will build on the morning lesson.

Just a reminder that Korpus will be hosting our weekly Uninstructed Figure Drawing Workshop this Saturday, July 30, 10am-1pm. ($15 drop in fee, cash only).

Korpus will also be hosting our last Sunday of the Month Uninstructed Figure Painting / Drawing Workshop this Sunday, July 31, 7pm-10pm. ($20 drop in fee, cash only).

Drawing benches and easels are provided, along with light refreshments. Please bring your own drawing and painting materials.

Our Faculty Show is still up, so you can view Korpus Instructor Artwork as well during the Workshops, or by making an appointment!

New Fall 2011 Class! "Academic Approach to Figure Painting" with David Alvarado

We are pleased to announce that David Alvarado will be joining Korpus in Fall 2011! He will be teaching a 10 week class titled "Academic Approach to Figure Painting". David studied for 6 years in Florence, Italy, with 4 years of training at the Florence Academy of Art. We are pleased to have David join our talented roster of Instructors at Korpus School of Art + Gallery! More information will be available soon on our Website.

A native of Los Angeles, David Alvarado began his artistic training soon after high school at the New York Academy of Design. Inspired by the vast 19th and 17th century collections housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, David chose to further his education in Florence, Italy at the Charles H. Cecil Studios and at the Florence Academy of Art, where he was able to obtain knowledge of a craft thought to be almost lost. David subsequently taught Academic Drawing at the Florence Academy of Art. Today David resides in Los Angeles, where he works on personal fine art and commercial art projects. He enjoys painting the life that surrounds him.

We are having a fantastic first semester at Korpus, and are looking forward to Fall 2011!

5 Hour, Single Pose Uninstructed Figure Drawing + Painting Workshop at Korpus School of Art + Gallery on Sunday, July 10, 6 pm - 11 pm

5 Hour, Single Pose Uninstructed Figure Drawing + Painting Workshop at Korpus School of Art + Gallery on Sunday, July 10, 6 pm - 11 pm.

Cost: $35 cash / check if PREPAID by the day before the Workshop, and $40 cash only at the door.   Pay in advance and save $5!

We are pleased to announce that Rebecca Kimmel is running a NEW Drawing + Painting Workshop 10Week Class on Saturdays, from 2-5 pm!

There will be a model each week and students will receive instruction on Drawing and/or Painting.

New Drawing + Painting Workshop Class at Korpus!

Korpus is organizing a new 10-Week Drawing + Painting Workshop Class!
This new class will meet Friday morning: 10 am – 1 pm
Instructor: Rebecca Kimmel

Class Description:

The Drawing + Painting Workshop class is geared toward beginning, intermediate, and advanced drawing and painting students. This is an open workshop format class in which both drawing and painting subjects will be taught, depending on the needs of the individual student. Students will primarily work from reference and not a model for the majority of the class. However, a model can be hired for the class on occasion at the request of the students, with the additional model fee to be split amongst those students wishing to hire a model.

Welcome to the Korpus School of Art. Founded in 2011 by artist Rebecca Kimmel, KSA was established to teach and promote traditional figurative art. The Korpus School of Art is dedicated to teaching traditional Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture. KSA offers College Portfolio Preparation for high school and college transfer students. KSA offers programs for high school students through adults. We welcome beginning, intermediate, and advanced students in this age range. Our teachers have a wealth of experience and a long track record of quality teaching. We are committed to providing our students with high quality traditional art education.
